Severe Weather Watch Gail Force Winds – Clutha, Southland & Stewart Island

A disturbed westerly flow covers central and southern New Zealand. A front embedded in this flow moves over southern New Zealand today (Wednesday), with a period of severe westerly gales likely in the far south of the South Island.

Severe gale west to northwesterlies for coastal Clutha, Southland including Stewart Island.

Please note, a period of strong westerly winds is expected on Thursday, and may approach severe gale in exposed places for a time. A Watch may be issued later today or Thursday morning to cover this possibility.

Please note, after 7pm today (Wednesday), southwesterly winds may approach severe gale in exposed places through to Thursday afternoon, and a Watch may be issued later today covering this possibility.

Forecast: Severe westerly gales gusting 140 km/h.
