Good morning, Invercargill, and welcome to a fresh week of weather! Sunday's off to a mild but breezy start, and there's plenty to like in the days leading up to Labour Weekend. After a dry, blustery Sunday and a cloudier Monday, things settle into a run of fine, warm spring days from Wednesday, with temperatures climbing to around 20°. Here's how it's shaping up.
Today
It was about 10° at Invercargill Airport at 6am, feeling more like 8° in a westerly of around 24 km/h, with no rain overnight and the barometer high and steady at 1030 hPa.
The morning brings cloudy periods with a few sunny breaks, and the westerly sits at about 20 to 30 km/h. Through the afternoon the fine spells grow longer, but the westerly picks up as well, gusting around 55 to 60 km/h from mid-afternoon into the early evening. The high is around 16°, so it's a pleasant spring day if you can tuck in out of the wind.
The wind eases tonight under partly cloudy skies, with a low near 8°. Sunrise was 6:46am and sunset is 8:18pm.
If you're heading out to Teretonga Park for day two of racing, it's a dry day for it, but that westerly will have some bite, so bring a windproof jacket and enjoy the sunny afternoon spells.
Monday and Tuesday
Monday is mostly cloudy, with the chance of a shower from the morning and westerlies again, though not as strong as today. Expect a high near 15° and a low of about 9°. Tuesday may start with a few showers, but they clear to a fine day during the morning, and it's milder at around 18°.
Wednesday to Friday: warm and settled before Labour Weekend
This is the stretch to look forward to. Wednesday is fine and warm, with westerlies and a high of about 20°. Thursday stays fine, with northerlies turning westerly in the morning and a high around 18°. Friday is fine again under northwesterlies and warms back up to about 20°, just in time for the long weekend. Thursday and Friday nights are clear and cool, with lows near 8°, so expect fresh starts before the sun takes over. It's a great few days for the garden, the washing line, a walk at Queens Park or a day out at Oreti Beach.
Labour Weekend
The long weekend gets off to a good start, with Saturday partly cloudy and still warm at around 20°, and northwesterlies that may freshen in the afternoon. It looks like the best day of the weekend for outdoor plans.
The forecasts then point to a change, with a few showers possible on Sunday 25 October and rain on Labour Day, Monday 26 October, which could be heavy at times. It's still a week away, so we'll keep an eye on it and update you closer to the weekend.
