Heavy rain for Fiordland, and severe northwest gales for eastern parts of the South Island

A front preceded by a strong and moist northwesterly flow affects Fiordland tonight, then weakens as it moves slowly northwards during Sunday morning. Heavy rain is falling in Fiordland and should continue through to the early hours of Sunday morning, and a heavy rain Warning remains in force for the area.

In addition, severe northwesterly gales are expected in exposed places ahead of the front, and a strong wind Warning is in force for inland parts of Otago, and Southland including Stewart Island.

Heavy Rain Warning
Heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly. Surface flooding and slips are also possible and driving conditions may be hazardous.

Area: Fiordland
Valid: 5 hours from 8:00pm Saturday to 1:00am Sunday
Forecast: Expect a further 40 to 70mm of rain to accumulate on what has already fallen, with isolated thunderstorms. Peak intensities of 20 to 30mm per hour.

Note, another period of heavy rain is expected from Sunday evening until around dawn on Monday. There is an increasing risk that another rainfall warning may have to be issued for this next event.

Strong Wind Warning
Strong wind gusts could damage trees, powerlines and unsecured structures. Driving may be hazardous, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles.

Area: Otago except Clutha
Valid: 5 hours from 8:00pm Saturday to 1:00am Sunday
Forecast: Severe northwest gales gusting 120 km/h in exposed places at times.

Area: Clutha, Southland and Stewart Island
Valid: 3 hours from 8:00pm to 11:00pm Saturday
Forecast: Severe northwest gales gusting 120 km/h in exposed places.
