Severe north to northwest gales for Fiordland, Southland, Otago followed by a strong southerly change.
An active front will move rapidly northeastwards across the lower South Island Friday morning, preceded by a very strong and moist northwest flow, and followed by much cooler southerlies.
This Warning is for severe north to northwest gales briefly affecting Fiordland, Southland, Otago overnight and Friday morning, when gusts of 120 km/h are possible.
Note that southerly gales may briefly become severe in exposed parts of Clutha and inland Otago as a strong southerly change moves north across the area early Friday morning.
Strong Wind Warning
Strong wind gusts could damage trees, powerlines and unsecured structures. Driving may be hazardous, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles.

Forecast: Northwest gales are forecast to be severe at times, with gusts reaching 120 km/h. The severe northwest gales are expected to be followed by a strong southerly change early Friday morning and these gales could also become briefly severe gusting 120 km/h in exposed places.
