Gale westerlies for the far south of the South Island and heavy rain for the West Coast

A front, preceded by strong west to northwest winds, moves north across the South Island today (Saturday) followed by a second front on Sunday and Monday.

These fronts bring periods of heavy rain to the West Coast with the heaviest falls expected in Westland about and south of Hokitika and a Heavy Rain Warning is now in force for this area. A Heavy Rain Watch remains in force for Fiordland, and now also covers the remainder of Westland and Buller.

In addition, the Watch covers the possibility of west to northwest winds rising to severe gale in coastal parts of Clutha and Southland including Stewart Island during today.

Strong Wind Watch

Area: Stewart Island, Coastal Southland and Coastal Clutha
Valid: 6 hours from 9:00am to 3:00pm Saturday
Forecast: West to northwest winds may approach severe gale in exposed places.

An update for severe weather will be issued by 9:00pm Saturday 28 Sep 2019.
