Construction of the new Museum of Southland remains on track and within budget, with completion expected later this year as work continues to transform the long-awaited facility into a modern cultural destination for the region.

While builders continue progress on the physical structure, the museum team has shifted its focus towards creating the experiences and stories that visitors will encounter once the doors open.

Museum of Southland Team Leader Experience David Dudfield said staff had been working closely with experience designers Gibson International and members of the community to develop the storytelling content that would feature throughout the museum.

The collaborative approach aims to ensure the museum reflects the identity, history, and people of Southland while delivering engaging and accessible experiences for visitors of all ages.

Planning for the exhibitions and interactive spaces has involved gathering ideas and insights from across the community, helping shape displays that capture both the region’s heritage and its future direction.

The storytelling elements are expected to play a major role in the visitor experience, combining historical material with modern design and technology to create immersive and meaningful exhibitions.
