WasteNet is asking Southlanders to be vigilant over their rubbish and recycling bins if their area is experience high winds.
The strong wind is causing bins and rubbish to fall over or be blown about the streets, which poses a hazard to road and footpath users.

WasteNet’s Senior Waste Officer Donna Peterson said there are several steps people could take to mitigate the effects of the wind on their bins.

  • If you don’t need to put your wheelie bin out, please don’t.
  • If you are home, please bring in your wheelie bin as soon as possible.
  • If your wheelie bin has been blown over and rubbish or recycling has blown about, please help us by picking up the litter where practicable.
  • If you have found a wheelie bin that’s not yours, please pull it up against a nearby fence, and contact your local Council tomorrow if the bin is still there.

“Finally, be vigilant when using footpaths or the road, as wheelie bins and rubbish may be caught by the wind,” said Ms Peterson.

And remember dont over fill or over compact your rubbish bin.
