Riverton Aparima Gears Up for its inaugural Riverton Retro Revival
This King's Birthday Weekend, the seaside village of Riverton will burst into colour, creativity, and nostalgia as the very first Riverton Retro Revival rolls into town on Sunday 31 May and Monday 1 June.
At the heart of the event are two much-loved local collaborators — the popular Riverton Community Op Shop and the long established Riverton Community Market Day — both helping bring an extra layer of community spirit, creativity, and discovery to the weekend.
Known throughout Southland for being one of the region's best op shops, the Riverton Community Op Shop has been quietly gathering vintage treasures especially for the Retro Revival weekend. Every purchase made at the op shop helps support local community projects, making it not only a treasure hunter's paradise, but also a chance to give directly back to the town itself.
On Sunday, the Retro Revival will also blend with the monthly Riverton Community Market Day at Flecks Hall, where regular stallholders and some new faces will create a bustling artisan market atmosphere. Visitors will find local baking, preserves, plants, vegetables, handmade goods, jewellery, crafts, and creative local products — alongside the market's ever-popular Kiwiana Bake-Off.
From there, colourful bunting will lead retro treasure hunters, vintage lovers, collectors, and curious day-trippers along Palmerston Street and through six venues and more than 20 stalls spread throughout Riverton's historic main street.
Visitors can expect a wonderfully eclectic mix of retro and vintage fashion, homewares, lamps, furniture, books, toys, paintings, costume jewellery, vintage beads, handbags, old-school baking, preserves, collectibles, classic car parts, and nostalgic treasures from the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. Every stall promises its own story — with locals opening up their collections, passions, and creativity for visitors to discover.
Warm cafés, food trucks, hot chips, sausage sizzles, and Mr Whippy will help keep visitors cosy as they explore the town. Organisers are also hoping to welcome classic and vintage vehicles to the streets, alongside live music and buskers to add to the festival atmosphere.
Locals are encouraged to dress in their vintage best and experience their own town in a completely new way, with pop-up shops, retro displays, and hidden treasures around every corner.
Located on the stunning southern coast and known as the gateway to the Southern Scenic Route, Riverton offers visitors the perfect winter weekend escape — a surf town with history, character, creativity, and a famously warm welcome. Visitors can also explore Te Hikoi Museum and its fascinating local history exhibitions.
Whether you're hunting for vintage vinyl, quirky collectibles, retro fashion, homemade baking, or simply a good excuse for a coastal road trip, the Riverton Retro Revival promises a weekend full of nostalgia, conversation, music, and discovery.
So rug up, gather your friends, and head for the coast this King's Birthday Weekend. A warm Riverton welcome — and perhaps the perfect vintage treasure — awaits.
