Te Anau's lakefront is finally taking shape — and construction could start by August.

The Fiordland Community Board says detailed design work on the lakefront development is progressing well, with final design approval and tendering expected to be wrapped up in time for an August construction start.

It's the first project from the Te Anau Development Plan to actually move into delivery. Years of planning, community consultation and long-term visioning are now becoming something physical.

The design reflects what locals asked for: an open, accessible waterfront that doesn't try to compete with the scenery. Terraced seating areas — built from natural materials rather than concrete — will be integrated into the landscape to provide informal spots to sit and look out over the lake. Pathways have been laid out to improve access and connectivity along the waterfront, with gathering spaces placed throughout.

Board chair Diane Holmes said the community's feedback has driven the design. "You told us what matters: keeping the lakefront open and accessible, creating spaces to sit and gather, and ensuring any development enhances, not overwhelms, the natural beauty of this special place."

Holmes said that input is visible in the finished product. "We've listened carefully to that input. You will see that reflected in elements such as the terraced seating areas, which are being designed not with concrete but with natural materials to provide informal places to sit, relax, and take in the lakefront views."

The board released a graphic with the update showing the layout of the space — pathway routes, seating placement and a close-up preview of how the terraced seating will look and function.

Fiordland is a place where development can go badly wrong if it feels forced or out of scale. What's been described here — natural materials, open sightlines, informal rather than monumental — suggests the designers have read the room. Whether the finished product delivers on that is a question for August.
