SuperSkills Jubilee is hosting its very first exhibition at the Whare Taupua Arts Murihiku during July.

Showcasing an inspiring collection of work created by participants attending its free life skills classes, the Creative Connections exhibition features everything from knitting, crochet, quilting, patchwork, sewing and slow stitching to art, crafts, diamond art and other handmade creations.

Co-ordinator Heather Barker said while the exhibition highlights some beautiful pieces, the real story is about the people behind them.

“Many of our participants joined SuperSkills feeling isolated, lacking confidence, or simply wanting to learn something new.

“Through our free classes, they've discovered not only new practical skills but also friendships, purpose, improved wellbeing, and renewed self-belief. Every item on display represents someone's personal journey of growth, perseverance and achievement.”

SuperSkills Jubilee Invercargill (formerly Jubilee SuperGrans) was established in 2021 under the umbrella of Jubilee Budget Advisory Service, complementing its long-standing financial mentoring services.

Today, SuperSkills Jubilee offers a wide range of free classes, workshops and support groups that help people develop practical skills, improve wellbeing and create meaningful social connections.

Heather said the classes are open to people of all ages.  The only stipulation is that, under 16yrs they must be accompanied by a caregiver.

“We have individuals as young as a few weeks of age in our mums and bubs class right up to those who are in their late 80’s.

“Items in our exhibition therefore show the wide diversity of our clients.  Their unique backgrounds, education levels, intellectual abilities, ages and cultures.

“That is what is so special about our organisation – anyone can join us, no one is excluded from learning skills and knowledge that can positively impact their lives and the lives of their whanau.”

She said at a time when the cost of living is placing increasing pressure on families, the free programmes provide an opportunity for people of all ages to learn valuable skills without financial barriers.

“Participants leave with practical abilities they can use for life, while also becoming part of a welcoming and supportive community.”

Heather said the exhibition tells a positive story about what can happen when people are given opportunities to connect, create and thrive.

“It's also a chance to recognise the remarkable talents that exist within our local community—many of which might otherwise never be seen.”

More than an exhibition of handcrafted items, it is an exhibition of courage, growth, resilience and hope—proof that when people are supported to learn and connect, extraordinary things can happen, she said.
