Now that the days are getting longer and we are getting the odd fine day, we decided to do the rounds and catch up on the new developments that are on the go in our fare city.At the eastern end of town work is progressing on a new petrol station complex. The new gas station is on the site once occupied by BP Dundee back in the day. That establishment closed when the underground fuel tanks reached their “best by” date. As you’ll recall, the building shell remained as the only remnant of a once thriving business. The City Council used the forecourt frame to erect a welcome sign for visitors coming here for the 2011 Rugby World Cup. Yes, its been a long work in progress. We believe that the new fuel station will further rev up the eastern exit / entrance to Invers. Not far down Tay Street from the new gas station is the new Bill Richardson Transport World. This would have to be one of the biggest building projects in the city in recent times. The project has seen much activity with big cranes carefully maneuvering huge concrete panels into place to make it the spectacle that it will become. The Richardson Transport World Museum will attract visitors from around the world is expected to be ready for opening in a matter of weeks. Also on our roundup is the new office complex on the corner of Don and Deveron Street’s. The building we understand will be the home of ASB Bank Southland operations. This building is an important addition to the stock of modern inner city buildings being situated between the new Malloch McClean and Crowe Howarth buildings. And to wind up our jaunt, here’s a pic of the new McDonald’s Restaurant on Ellis Road. We hear that this is expected to be open before Christmas.Once these projects are done and dusted perhaps someone could engage the designers and builders to tidy up some of the old scruffy buildings in the city centre and restore them to their former glory and reinvigorate the city centre. If you know of a new development that is or about to be on the go then please let us know. We’d love to feature it.
