Southland dairy farmer and Federated Farmers President Jason Herrick will contest the Southland electorate for New Zealand First at the next general election.

Herrick, who has been President of Southland Federated Farmers since 2024, brings more than 30 years of farming experience to his political bid. The dairy farmer and business owner was named 'advocate of the year' at the Federated Farmers AGM in 2025.

New Zealand First announced Herrick's candidacy today, describing him as "a proven community leader stepping forward to represent everyday New Zealanders."

Herrick has been vocal on issues affecting rural communities, particularly local government regulations, rural mental health, and environmental regulations. His advocacy work has made him a recognised figure in Southland farming circles.

"He is someone who has lived the challenges, built a business, and raised a family in rural New Zealand," the party said in its announcement.

The married father of four has extensive community leadership experience, having served on school boards, community groups, and local clubs. As an executive member of Federated Farmers Southland, he has represented farming interests across the region.

Herrick's political platform centres on what he calls "common sense, fairness, and unity." He believes New Zealand should not be divided, and that all Kiwis deserve equal treatment and the freedom to make their own choices.

His campaign will focus on strengthening the economy, supporting rural communities, and "restoring balance to decision-making." Herrick says he's ready to bring his "real-world experience and straight-talking leadership" to parliament.

The announcement positions Herrick as a candidate who understands "the real pressures facing farmers, tradies, and regional communities" through his three decades working on the land.

Herrick says he is "deeply invested in the future of the country and the opportunities available to the next generation," highlighting his commitment to long-term policy solutions for rural New Zealand.

The Southland electorate has been a competitive seat in recent elections, making Herrick's candidacy a significant development for New Zealand First's electoral strategy in the South Island.
