Southland Girls' High School has appointed John Grogan as its new principal, making him the first permanent male principal in the school's nearly 150-year history.
Mr Grogan, who has been Acting Principal since the start of the year and was previously Deputy Principal at the school, was selected following what the board describes as a thorough and highly competitive selection process.
Board presiding member Kelly Tagg said the calibre of applicants was high, reflecting both the strength of educational leadership nationally and the school's reputation.
"The Board undertook a careful and rigorous process, and we are confident we have appointed the right person to lead the school into the future," Mrs Tagg said.
She said Mr Grogan had a strong understanding of the school's values and a clear commitment to girls' education, student wellbeing, and learning.
Mrs Tagg said the board was proud and confident in the appointment, noting that from a very strong list of applicants, Mr Grogan was selected as the best person for the role. She said the board understood the significance of the decision and was unanimous in its support of Mr Grogan recognising that his leadership and values made him the right choice for the school's future.
Mr Grogan said he was absolutely delighted and honoured to be appointed principal.
"It is a real privilege to be entrusted with leading Southland Girls' High School," he said.
"The school has a proud history and a strong reputation for excellence in girls' education, and I am deeply committed to ensuring that continues."
He paid tribute to staff and outlined his focus moving forward.
"There are many outstanding teachers at Southland Girls' and strong systems already in place that support a positive culture and high-quality teaching and learning," he said.
"I am looking forward to building on that work, strengthening what we do well, and ensuring every student is supported to thrive."
Mrs Tagg said the board was excited about the future of the school under Mr Grogan's leadership.
"We know John will build on the school's strong foundations and further strengthen Southland Girls' High School as a beacon of excellence in girls education that continues to lead and evolve in a modern education environment," she said.
Mr Grogan has taken up the role immediately.
