Construction has started on a new headquarters for the Awarua Satellite Ground Station near Bluff — a $4.55 million project that will expand one of New Zealand's most quietly significant pieces of infrastructure.

Space Operations New Zealand (SpaceOps NZ) is leading the build, which includes a multi-purpose headquarters, workshops, and supporting infrastructure. A loan of up to $2.25 million from the Regional Infrastructure Fund is backing the project alongside co-investment from SpaceOps NZ itself. Completion is estimated for early 2027.

The station already plays a role in global satellite operations. This expansion is expected to lift the local workforce from 21 to around 30 highly skilled roles — a meaningful increase for a region where high-tech employment is scarce.

Regional Development Minister Shane Jones was characteristically blunt about the opportunity. "You don't need to be a rocket scientist to see why this is a great opportunity for Southland and New Zealand," Jones said. "Awarua is already a critical part of global satellite operations, and this expansion will enable further growth over time, lifting the local workforce from 21 to around 30 highly skilled roles, increasing high-value economic activity in Southland, and strengthening New Zealand's ground-based space infrastructure."

Associate Regional Development Minister Mark Patterson said the project signals real traction for the space sector in the south. "We're seeing real momentum for a project that will strengthen New Zealand's position in the global space industry while delivering jobs and economic opportunity at home," Patterson said. "Southland continues to diversify its regional economy, and this project builds on that by creating new, high-tech opportunities alongside the region's traditional strengths in primary production." An extraordinary story of vision 22 years ago by Robin McNeil who pitched Awarua as the perfect global location to track polar orbit satellites. A great and growing initiative for Southland and New Zealand.

Around 10 construction jobs are expected during the build phase.
