So what does a $100,000 sculpture buy you that has been shrouded in secrecy for months will finally be unveiled in south Invercargill next month.

The 7-metre by 10m whale tail – designed by Hawkes Bay artist David Trubridge – was chosen from 38 entrants as the winner of South Alive’s sculpture competition in March, about seven months after the organisation said the winner would be announced.

Funded by a $100,000 grant from retired Invercargill businessman Cliff Broad, the metal sculpture will stand over the entrance to Russell Square on the corner of Dalrymple St and Elles Rd.

South Alive co-ordinator Janette Malcolm said the sculpture was being painted and would be erected on the site in early August. It would then be officially unveiled on August 21.
