Wachner Place Refresh With Clock Relocation Advances
Invercargill City Council’s Group Manager of Infrastructure, Erin Moogan, explained that once the repairs are completed, the clock will be moved closer to Dee Street. “The clock will be housed in a new tower, making it a more prominent feature of the area,” Moogan said.
“The redevelopment of the Wachner Place – Esk Street West area and the subsequent renovation of the clock aligns with the next phase in Council’s city streets project. This project aims to enhance the pride in the city, the area’s connectivity, and aesthetic appeal,” Moogan added.
She noted that the relocation of the clock, approximately 23 metres to the east, will help accommodate coach travel to the new Distinction Hotel. The repair work is expected to take up to a year, depending on what is discovered during the process. Once complete, the clock will be moved into a new tower designed to match the current look of the CBD and Esk and Don streets.
“The Wachner Place clock has been in Invercargill for over 100 years, and it’s only fitting that it receives a bit of tender love and care. Through the refurbishment process, we will aim to retain as much of its original condition as possible,” Moogan said.
The cost of the clock repair will be covered by the Council, while the construction of the new tower will be funded by Distinction Hotels.
