Around 1000 litres of fuel and a number of other items were stolen from a commercial property near Tarras last weekend, and Cromwell Police want to hear from anyone who was in the area.
The burglary happened at the corner of Jollys Road and Deep Creek Road sometime between 5pm Friday June 19 and 7am Monday June 22. Along with the fuel, items described as vital for day-to-day operations were taken.
Detective Scott Vollweiler of Alexandra CIB is leading the investigation. "We understand these offences are extremely frustrating for business owners and are urging anybody with information to come forward and talk to Police," Vollweiler said.
Police are specifically looking for anyone who saw suspicious activity in the area over that weekend, as well as CCTV or dashcam footage that could help identify those responsible.
Anyone with information can contact Police on 105 by phone or online at 105.police.govt.nz. Quote file number 260622/3886. Anonymous tipoffs can be made through Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
Police are also urging rural businesses and farming operations to tighten up security around fuel storage. Advice from a joint guide produced by Police, FMG, and Federated Farmers includes parking vehicles with fuel caps close to a wall or another vehicle to restrict tank access, keeping fuel out of sight and ensuring tanks are locked, installing security lighting over fuelling areas, fitting locking devices to all petrol and diesel tanks on the property, and keeping a fuel consumption inventory so theft can be spotted quickly.
