On Thursday 13 July the Gore Gardens will be transformed into a dazzling light display with food trucks, face painting, performers and more for this free community event to celebrate Matariki.
Generous support from Community Trust South has enabled an exciting new element this year – a giant tipi. The tipi will act as a warm gathering space for people to escape the cold, socialise and listen to live music.
Gore District Council Events Coordinator Jessica Swan said the success of the inaugural Kāhui Whetū last year had set the standard.
“We knew that with the popularity of our first Kāhui Whetū, we had to go bigger and better for the second event. We have engaged a new lighting provider so that the displays are different, tripled the number of food trucks on offer and added new roving performers to the mix.
“Kāhui Whetū has something for all ages.”
One of last year’s favourites – Stella, the magical illuminated fairy – returns to enchant the children. There are also two new performers who will showcase glow and fire poi.
Darcy Kerr will provide musical entertainment and The Big Yellow Paintbox will be doing special neon face paint.
“We have about a dozen food trucks lined up so everyone should find something delicious to eat – it’ll be a perfect winter dinner treat,” Miss Swan said.
So, mark the calendar – 13 July at the Gore Gardens, between Ardwick and Fairfield streets, from 5:30pm – 8:30pm to catch this one night only event.
