The SBS Bank Southland Stags have added two young Australian forwards to their 2026 NPC squad, signing NSW Waratahs players Clem Halaholo and Jack Barrett ahead of the upcoming season.
Halaholo joins as a versatile forward capable of playing lock or loose forward, arriving off the back of a breakout Super Rugby Pacific season with the Waratahs. The 2023 Junior Wallaby made his mark with a try on debut and went on to establish himself as a regular starter, earning a reputation as a powerful ball carrier with an imposing physical presence.
Halaholo came through the NSW Gen Blue pathway before making his first grade debut for Sydney University. He pushed his way into the Waratahs environment after responding strongly to early setbacks in his professional career, carrying his form from Super Rugby AUS into a consistent Super Rugby Pacific campaign.
Stags Head Coach Scott Eade said Halaholo's physicality and flexibility made him a welcome addition.
"Clem has shown throughout the past 12 months that he's capable of performing consistently at Super Rugby level. He's a powerful athlete who carries the ball strongly, works hard around the field and gives us genuine flexibility with his ability to play both lock and loose forward. We're excited to welcome him to Southland."
Barrett arrives as specialist loosehead prop cover, having spent three seasons in the Waratahs programme and made his Super Rugby Pacific debut in 2024. Also a former Junior Wallabies representative, Barrett came through the same NSW Gen Blue pathway and has built a reputation as a hard-working front-rower with a strong set piece.
Barrett grew up in Lightning Ridge, a rural town in New South Wales, and said the chance to continue his development in Southland appealed immediately.
Eade said Barrett's attitude set him apart.
"Jack is a specialist loosehead prop who has already gained valuable experience in the Waratahs environment. He's a young player who loves the physical side of the game, is eager to keep developing and we believe Southland is a great place for him to take that next step. His attitude and work ethic are qualities that will fit well within our environment."
Both signings reflect the Stags' ongoing focus on recruiting ambitious young players looking to develop their game at NPC level. With Halaholo adding versatility to the loose forwards and locks and Barrett bolstering a specialist position, the Stags look to have done smart business ahead of the 2026 campaign.
