March 28, 1933 – November 14, 2022
A hard-working family man, gardener, fisherman & cook extraordinaire. On Monday, November 14, 2022, peacefully passed at Dunstan Hospital, with Glenda and Gaye at his side. Loving and much-loved husband and friend to Joyce. Beloved father, father-in-law and friend of Glenda and David Rogers, Gaye and Brian Masters. Honoured Grandad, Great-grandad and friend of Kirsten and Julian, Culum and Shanla, Brandon, Kendall, Brodie, Jack, Elliet, Libby, Violet and Aria. Loved son of the late Phyllis and Stephen Butler. Loved brother and friend to the late Joyce and Baxter Flett, the late Ray and Helen Butler, the late Colin and Toss Butler, and their families. Thank you to the wonderful staff at Dunstan Hospital. Your empathy and care made Mervyn’s passing so very special for Mervyn and the family. Thank you to the staff at Golden View Care Cromwell; for making a home where Mervyn and Joyce could finally be together again.
We can only lose what we have. We cannot lose what we are. Thank you, Merv, for being a part of what we are.

Dearly loved & loving husband of Jill (59 years) Adored Dad & Dad in-Law of Stuart, Lorraine & Warren, Nina & David. Loving Grandad of Kea, Anthony, Kadin, Daniel, Alisa, Loghan & Cameron. Son of the late Thomas William & Jessica Florence (York, England) & Brother of the late Pam, and Peter. A lover of golf and an armchair sportsman. Forever thankful that we had you as long as we did. Your ready smile and Yorkshire humour will be sorely missed. We are extremely grateful for the level of care he received from Dr. Jacqui Walker & the team at Catherine St Medical Centre and the St Johns ambulance team. A service is being held at All Saints Church, 509 Dee Street Gladstone, Invercargill on Thursday 17th November at 11:00 am to be followed by a private burial at Eastern Cemetry.
