The owners of Cosmetic Clinic Invercargill take a research-based approach to their treatments and are thriving in the south since opening in December 2022.
Marek Grabowski and Saskia de Ruyter took a bold move to sell all their possessions and move from Auckland to Invercargill to establish a brand new franchise in Invercargill Central shopping centre.
They’re employing graduates straight out of the Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) and training their team to become experienced professionals.
In their first year in business, they absolutely smashed it - becoming The Cosmetic Clinic of the year nationally ahead of 22 others. They were also finalists in the Southland Business Excellence awards two years ago for a New and Emerging business.
“I’ve always believed that if you take care of your team, they’ll take care of your clients. That’s our foundation. We focus on creating a supportive environment where everyone can grow. We’ve seen junior therapists flourish into confident professionals now performing advanced laser treatments, and that’s something we’re really proud of,” he said.
Marek said they’re not just about treatments – they’re about people, development, and creating a space where both staff and clients feel valued.
With a background in business management and Saskia bringing her wealth of experience in the beauty and wellness industry, the couple say the change of pace in the south is refreshing.
Marek is originally from Poland and Saskia from South Africa, and they met working on cruise ships.
They made the move to New Zealand in 2019 and Marek managed the Manukau branch while Saskia was a laser technician at Sylvia Park.
“Over the years, we worked hard, learned the ins and outs of the business, and were fortunate enough to be offered the opportunity to open our own franchise in Invercargill. It was a bold move – different pace, different culture – but we embraced it fully. We sold everything, packed our bags, and haven’t looked back.”
Every Cosmetic Clinic around the country has a slightly different focus, and a lot of that was climate driven.
Marek said the treatments in the south were largely focused on treating inflammation and redness of the skin because of the harsh climate and extremes of hot and cold.
At the Cosmetic Clinic Invercargill, they don’t just follow trends, they evaluate every treatment to make sure it’s safe, effective, and worth offering to their clients.
“One thing we always come back to is that consistency matters more than hype. Regular monthly treatments often deliver better long-term results than chasing the next big thing.”
Marek and Saskia are excited about the future of aesthetics in Southland.
“There’s still so much opportunity to educate people – not just about hair removal alternatives, but about long-term skin health and how to properly care for your skin at every age.
“We’re also seeing growing interest in cosmetic injectables, and we’re looking forward to continuing that conversation and helping more people feel confident in their skin.”
Next month we’ll feature more about laser hair removal and the benefit over traditional methods.
