It’s almost a case of deja-vu for Wrens Decorating – having to close its doors temporarily for the second time in 10 years.
Now back operating under level 3, owners Dean and Shelley Todd have been reflecting on the lessons of Covid-19 and the big snow dump in 2010.
“What we have learnt is that even the loyal customer will follow you, so you have to be ready for them. You have to be open. The customer is an extension of you and your business and they trust you,” he said.
Operating through contactless purchasing, people can look on the website or window shop and then ring up the staff, who will have the goods ready to load straight into the boot of your car.
“We have done this before. This is how we had to operate 10 years ago when the roof collapsed,” he said.
In 2010 Wrens transferred a lot of product into an abandoned warehouse and continued trading, as they waited for their rebuild nine months later.
“We’re a bricks and mortar store. We don’t want to sell online,” Dean said.
Only back operating for less than a week, there has been strong demand for paint, and people were also stocking up on items in case they went back to level 4, he said.
“We can show them wallpaper through the window, and they can take the books home on appro, but people don’t want the drape guy in their house just yet until we are on the level 2,” he said.
Staff have been split into two bubbles so the store could be open longer, but Dean said it could take a while before they were back to 100% capacity.
“People have been very tolerant – if we haven’t got it, they say, ‘okay, we’ll wait a couple of days.’
