A section of SH1 East Road in Invercargill has been closed to westbound traffic from Monday 16 June, as PowerNet and SouthRoads begin work to install a new 66kV electricity distribution line. This project is part of a wider regional upgrade and is expected to take up to eight weeks to complete.

The westbound lane of East Road between Mill Road North and Racecourse/Rockdale Road is affected. During the closure, all westbound traffic heading towards Invercargill will need to use a detour via Mill Road North, Findlay Road and Racecourse Road.

In addition to this closure, Highways South will be carrying out drainage works on SH6 near the Lorneville roundabout and on SH93 Old Coach Road near Clinton. Temporary traffic lights and reduced speed limits will be in place to manage traffic flow at these sites.

Several third-party works and events are also taking place this week, requiring traffic management on various state highways. These include:

  • Stop/go controls on SH1 Marine Parade in Bluff for excavation work
  • Lane reductions on SH1 Clyde Street for watermain installation
  • Lane drop between McIvor and Bainfield Roads on SH6 North Road in Invercargill for pavement repairs
  • Stop/go on SH6 Athol Five Rivers Highway for excavation activities
  • Traffic lights on SH96 Winton-Wreys Bush Highway at Heddon Bush Road for culvert work
  • Stop/go on SH99 Orepuki Riverton Highway for pole replacement

Motorists are advised to allow extra time for their journeys and check current conditions before travelling. Real-time updates are available on the NZTA Journeys website.

Freight operators can also use the Freight Impact Register to identify potential restrictions in the Southland region over the next fortnight.
