Residents of Southland, Clutha, and Fiordland are urged to prepare for significant rainfall and potential flooding as heavy rain warnings have been issued for these regions. Accompanied by a humid northerly flow, this weather system will bring strong north to northwest winds across many regions.
For Southland and Clutha:
- Duration: 18 hours from 6am to midnight, Thursday, 11 April.
- Forecast: Accumulations of 60 to 100 mm, especially in the west, with peak rates of 10 to 20 mm per hour on Thursday morning and early afternoon.
- Impacts: Expected localised flooding, rapid rises in water levels of streams and rivers, potential for slips, and hazardous driving conditions.
For Fiordland:
- Duration: 22 hours from 8pm Wednesday, 10 April, to 6pm Thursday, 11 April.
- Forecast: Additional rainfall of 100 to 150 mm atop existing levels, with peak rates of 20 to 30 mm per hour on Thursday morning.
- Impacts: Similar risks of rapid water level increases, surface flooding, slips, and dangerous roads.
