A blood moon, also known as a lunar eclipse, is set to appear on Friday evening, with peak visibility expected between 8pm and 8:30pm. The phenomenon occurs when the moon passes through Earth's shadow, giving it a reddish tint.
Stargazers can see the event with the naked eye, but using a camera, telescope, or binoculars may enhance the experience. The moon will rise in the east after sunset, so those hoping to catch a glimpse should look toward the eastern horizon or visit a beach on the east coast for clearer views.
Weather conditions will play a key role in visibility. MetService is forecasting mostly fine weather across much of the country, although there may be isolated showers in the Bay of Plenty and Coromandel. The South Island’s West Coast is expected to see some rain, particularly in Fiordland, with isolated showers in Otago and Southland clearing later on.
For those who miss this blood moon, there’s good news — another one is expected later this year. The last time a blood moon was seen was in 2022, making this year a special opportunity for skywatchers.
