The Winton watermain repair has been completed and indications are it has been a success. Council staff and contractors turned the water back on about 5pm and the repaired section of pipe was holding, meaning water service has been resumed at Winton. Winton residents are advised to flush their taps out to remove air from the pipes. Turn the taps on and let them run until the water flows smoothly. This is normal after a stoppage. We’re grateful for the way the Winton community rallied today to conserve water in such exceptional and trying circumstances. Thank you all for your patience and consideration.

Here’s the latest update on the water situation in Winton from Southland District Council

  • – 2013 census – 2,211 people in Winton. Water supply to the entire town has been affected
  • Unable to tell you when exactly the pipe ruptured but when Council staff and contractors arrived on-site about midday there was surface flooding visible
  • At Railway Street, about a block back from the main street of Winton
  • Unable to speculate on the cause of the rupture, but the immediate priority is to get the pipe repaired and water supply back up and running in the town
