A person is in hospital with serious to critical injuries after a truck and car collided at a Mabel Bush intersection northeast of Invercargill on Monday evening.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Grove Bush Woodlands Road and Rakahouka Hedgehope Road about 5:35pm. Police, Fire and Emergency New Zealand, and ambulance staff attended the scene.

The road has been closed overnight and will remain so until a scene examination is carried out in the morning. It is not yet known how long the examination will take.

Cordons are in place around the crash scene. Motorists travelling through the area are asked to use Mabel Bush Road and Woodstock Road as an alternate route while the closure remains in effect.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the crash.
