Equally as important as CCTV security, however, is using your eyes and ears. Senior Sergeant Cynthia Fairley of Southland Police says it’s essential to look out for your community, neighbours, and to let Police know if “anything or anyone looks out of place”.
“We need the public to help us by being our eyes and ears,” she says.
Senior Sergeant Fairley recommends that people note down suspicious vehicles and details of suspicious people, before contacting Police. Neighbourhood support groups may also be of assistance.
You can even help yourself by securing your property, documenting and registering your important items on snap.org.nz removing keys from vehicles, installing new lighting, and keeping tools and other desirable items hidden and secure – including fuel.
Being sensible with firearms should also be a priority, recording serial numbers, not leaving them in vehicles, and keeping them safe.
Finally, it’s important to be smart if you come face to face with an offender.
“We ask residents to not put themselves in danger or take the law into their own hands if confronted by offenders – but to instead contact Police.”
