A mix of state highway renewals, district road closures, and council infrastructure works are underway across Southland this week. Here's what motorists need to know.

Invercargill
The major disruption for city drivers remains SH6 North Road at Waikiwi, where northbound lanes between Ruru Street and West Plains Road are closed for approximately four weeks. Southbound lanes remain open to all traffic. Light vehicles detour via Renfrew Street, Gloucester Street, and West Plains Road. Heavy vehicles and HPMVs are directed via Bay Road, Drury Lane, Gloucester Street, and West Plains Road.

Work is nearing it's conclusion on North Road, and we hope to have everything completed by Friday (weather dependant). However over the next few days there will be some extra restrictions in place as we complete the top surfacing work:TUESDAY 14th:From 7am the West Plains intersection wil be closed as we pave across this intersection. Detour will be:o Light-Renfrew Street – Drury Lane – West Plains Road – Steel Road – Moore Road – SH6 o Heavy – Bay Road - Drury Lane – West Plains Road – Steel Road – Moore Road – SH6Thiis will be for one day only for Tuesday 14th, and we'll open West Plains Road intersection as soon as it's safe to do so. WEDNESDAY 15th:Huia St intersection will be closed from 9am for most of the day as we complete paving in this area. We'll reopen Huia St as soon as it's safe to do so but it's likely to remain closed for most of Wednesday. Please note that the above programme will be dependant on a number of factors including weather.

Bay Road:
On Bay Road, Invercargill City Council advises that the foul sewer renewal is nearly complete — most of the work is done. However, the final stage between Drury Lane and Ross Road has been delayed due to the resurfacing work on North Road. Completion is now projected for May 2026. Drivers using Bay Road as part of the North Road heavy vehicle detour should be aware of this.

Gala Street:
Resealing of Gala Street between Dee and Deveron Streets.
Work will begin on 15 April and continue through to the end of May.
Work will start between Kelvin and Deveron Streets on the eastbound side, before switching to the other side. During this time, only one lane in one direction will be open.
There will be no on-street parking, please use nearby side streets for parking. Footpaths will remain open at all times.
This work is heavily weather dependent so there may be delays.

State Highway Renewals
On SH90 in the Waikaka Valley, construction between Waikaka Road and Cunningham Road continues through Easter and into mid-April. Allow 5–10 minutes extra through the site.

SH1 at Pukerau has traffic lights in operation between Landslip Road and Pukerau Township for around four weeks. Expect 5–10 minute delays.

Southland District Council Road Closures

Mokoreta, Waihopai — Klondyke Road between Mokoreta Tahakopa Road and Matheson/Craig Road is closed from Monday 13 April until Tuesday 5 May for bridge replacement. Residents on both sides retain property access. Northbound detour via Wyndham Mokoreta Road and Craig Road; southbound via Mokoreta Tahakopa Road and Matheson Road.
