Here we are with the first look in The Rear View Mirror. A look back at events and things that have made us raise our eyebrows, high five each other or at least stimulate some conversation across the kitchen table, the office desk or at the checkout.

What do you make of the Southland Regional Development Strategy? A bold vision for where Invers and Southland could be and should be heading in the future. The report is dead on when it says feedback is that things are OK but we are at risk of being left behind.
One of the main points is to increase population up to about 105 thousand. Sounds easy.

First and foremost, we must attract and develop new industry that will create jobs, preferably good paying jobs. Build on our strengths, food, education and IT should be the foundations. The rest will like new shops etc will follow. But please have a good read of the report. It makes good reading.
That brings us to the shareholder approval of shareholders of Silver Fern Farms for Chinese interests to take a 50% interest in the business and secure its future. There was really no other alternative. But where this will take the southern meat industry, well your guess is good as ours.

The City Council deserves some flak over its handling (or lack of) over purchasing new Christmas lights and decorations for the city. Sending a delegation to China to select suitable decorations and come back empty handed was a disgrace. And as first exposed on Whats On Ivers having just a small part of the city getting decorations is far from satisfactory. Seems all a bit rushed and hurried from this angle.
The Council’s parks and reserves folk deserve accolades. Our parks and gardens look a picture of spring beauty, and what does the weather do? Throw its worst at us. Typical October!

To wrap up, we’ve had a bad week as far as criminal activity or unexpected deaths goes with our Police engaged in two homicide investigations including the death of an 18month old in Wallacetown

then a missing Gore woman whose body police found and the Saturday evening death of a man on Dee street

and now police finding the body of a young chap who dived off the Riverton Bridge at the weekend. Along with the death of a young motorist on the Dipton Winton highway.

Our thoughts go out to family, whanau and friends of those involved.

That’s the Rear View Mirror, time to look forward to a new week and a holiday weekend at the end of it. Have a great weekend folks and lets all make an effort to make Invers an extra special place.

And well done the All Black kicking the French out of the Rugby World Cup.
