Police are advising road users around the Southern District to be aware while driving today due to the high winds currently affecting the area.
A campervan has blown over on the Mossburn, Five Rivers Road at around 2pm today due to gale-force winds. The two occupants were unharmed.
A truck has rolled over near the intersection of Hillas Road and Mossburn, Five Rivers Road around the same time. The driver of the truck was not injured.
The intersection where the truck rolled, is partially blocked and this may remain for some time until the winds subside and the truck can be removed with tow wagons.
Police and contractors are on site to ensure safety for road users.
Motorists especially those with high-sided vehicles, including caravans and campervans are advised to exercise extreme caution while driving in the area today or avoid driving at all, if possible.
Southland District Council have advised of road closures due to strong winds.
High winds are playing havoc with roads in northern Southland.
State Highway 97 (Mossburn to Five Rivers) is closed until further notice because of the strong winds. Please avoid the area or delay your journey.
A truck and trailer unit blew over on State Highway 97 near Hillas Road. The road is now clear but the threat remains. The highway is closed, including Lowther Road and Ellis Road.
High-sided vehicles are warned to exercise extreme caution in the northern Southland area.
Meanwhile, Wreys Bush Mossburn Road is closed between Cemetery Road and Chewings Road after large trees were blown across the road. Contractors are on site but it will take time to clear the trees.
We have also had reports of trees blown down across Wairio Wreys Bush Road.
Drivers are advised to drive to the conditions, exercise extreme care and be wary of trees and debris across the roads.
