The SBS Bank Southland Stags have bolstered their backline ahead of the 2026 NPC season, signing three players including a third-generation Southland rugby family member.
Gregor Rutledge joins the squad as a product of the Rugby Southland pathway system, completing a remarkable family hat-trick. His grandfather Leicester Rutledge made 113 appearances for Southland, his father Jason played 143 matches in maroon and gold, and now Gregor has the chance to add his own chapter to that legacy. He is currently balancing studies in Dunedin with his commitment to the Rugby Southland Academy.
Joining Rutledge in the new signings is outside back Josh Augustine, a former Hastings Boys' High School student who chose Southland after signing a development contract with the Highlanders. Augustine is no stranger to the Stags environment, having been involved in pre-season previously. Despite injury setbacks in recent seasons, the attacking back has impressed coaches with his pace, skill and attitude. The Stags describe him as a dangerous player capable of shifting momentum in an instant.
The third addition is Glen Vaihu, an experienced outside back who arrives after being a regular starter for Moana Pasifika in 2026. Vaihu brings serious professional pedigree — he made his Super Rugby debut in 2021 as part of the Melbourne Rebels development system before playing in Australia, Japan and most recently with Moana Pasifika. Known for his ability to break tackles, generate metres and create opportunities from broken play, his arrival adds genuine depth and experience to the Stags backline.
Together, the three signings give the Stags a strong mix of local development, emerging talent and proven professional experience out wide. With Augustine and Vaihu both capable of causing damage with ball in hand, and Rutledge continuing a proud Southland rugby tradition, the backline shapes up as one to watch in the 2026 NPC campaign.
The Stags have expressed excitement about all three players and their potential to contribute throughout the season.
