Southland’s one-stop shop for jobs and career advice is back and ready to provide a helping hand for job-seekers in Southland.

The Southland Pop Up Job Shop is returning for its second year and opened today on Tay street (next to Zookeepers cafe) and is expanding across the region with pop up shops to open in Invercargill, Gore, 18th April – Irk Street (next door to Smiths City car park) and Te Anau during Te Anau, 19th April  – 43 Town Centre (Next to the Distinction Luxmore hotel)

The Southland-born initiative to connect those in the region with employment opportunities was extremely well received last year with 520 people visiting the Invercargill Pop-Up Job shop.

Venture Southland labour market coordinator Kirsten Diack said the success of last year’s pop-up job shop had encouraged the expansion into Gore and Te Anau.

“We are excited to have expanded the locations of the shop so that more people are able to realise the extent of employment opportunities available across the region,” Diack said.

The initiative is part of Venture Southland’s co-ordinated response to Southland’s people shortage and aligns with the Southland Regional Development Strategy goal of attracting 10,000 more people to the region by 2025.

“We have organised local employers to come and speak on the skills needed in their industry and will have professional advice available every day,” Diack said.

It was an excellent opportunity for those starting out in the workforce, unemployed or looking for a change in career, she said.

The Invercargill Pop Up Job Shop will be open from 16 April to 21 April and held at 54 Tay Street, next door to Zookeepers café.

“The shop provides a relaxed and friendly environment in which connections can be made with local employers,” Diack said.

The initiative is being supported by the Southland Chamber of Commerce and Southern Directionz who will have staff on site to provide assistance with creating effective CV’s and lasting impressions in job interviews.

The shop would provide local employers the opportunity to display vacancies free of charge and connect with local job seekers.

“This is another way that we are working to future-proof Southland’s labour market,” Diack said.
