The team at Mitre 10 MEGA Invercargill are all buzzing this morning after customer Sharen Watson from Nightcaps was the lucky winner of the $20,000 prize draw at the weekend.
Store general manager Tracy Key said despite the soggy weather on Saturday morning, there was plenty of excitement for their 20th birthday celebrations, and especially with the main prize draw. Related: Mitre 10 Mega Invercargill Celebrates 20 Years
Nineteen other customers also won a wheelbarrow each of prizes. “Sharen and her family were absolutely thrilled to have won the competition and enjoyed having a good look through the container of prizes before they were delivered that afternoon.”
The Mitre 10 Mega team started the ball rolling at the beginning of the month, where every customer who spent $20 or more went into the draw for the main prize being $20,000 of products.
Twenty lucky customers were then drawn on March 3 and invited to come into the store on Saturday, where they pulled a unique code out of bucket - one of which unlocked the 20-foot storage container full of goodies.
Tracy said there was a mixture of products inside - everything from outdoor living, paint, tools, gardening products and so much more.
Instore and in conjunction with the birthday celebrations is the completed upgrade of the playground, which has been revamped and looks fabulous, Tracy said.
There’s been some great memories of the Mitre 10 MEGA site over the years, and the site at 12 Elles Road has an interesting history.
Originally, the building was used as a school. In the early 2000s it was repurposed and became a Woolworths supermarket.
Then, in a major redevelopment project, Mitre 10 MEGA acquired the Woolworths site.
As part of the 2004/5 expansion, the supermarket building was gutted and extensively redeveloped—adding an extra 2,853 m² of new retail space to create a total retail area of 8,118 m², making it one of Southland’s largest outlets.
The new Mitre 10 MEGA store was successfully completed and officially opened by Mayor Tim Shadbolt in March 2005. Initially employing 100 team, the store now employs 160 team members and up to 180 team members during peak trading periods.
Having been part of the team at Mitre 10 MEGA Invercargill for all those 20 years, Tracy recalls “back in the day the MEGA concept was very new to our team and our customers.
"The store seemed so big and there were times that we duplicated products around the store to fill up. Now the store is jammed packed with a significant product range of over 45,000 product lines and plenty more available online.”
Tracy and her team are incredibly proud of their world class home improvement retailing in Southland.
