State Highway 93 is closed tonight after a serious two-vehicle crash between Mataura and Clinton.

Police were called about 7pm. The collision happened between Range and Kaiwera roads, and one person has been flown to Dunedin Hospital with critical injuries.

One person has been flown to Dunedin Hospital with critical injuries after a serious two-vehicle crash closed State Highway 93 between Mataura and Clinton on Thursday night.

The highway remains closed in both directions while the Serious Crash Unit examines the scene. The unit's examination process can take several hours, meaning the closure may remain in place well into the night. Diversions are in place between Kaiwera Road and Mataura.

Motorists travelling between the two towns should avoid the area and use an alternative route. Drivers are advised to allow extra travel time while the closure remains in effect.
