- Pole construction on Findlay Road will begin on 8 July and last up to 8 weeks
- SH1 Tay Street westbound will be closed for night resurfacing work on 6 and 7 July
- Several highways across Southland will have delays due to repairs and third-party work
Powernet and Highways South have both announced roadworks across Southland that are expected to impact drivers over the coming weeks.

Starting Tuesday 8 July, Powernet will begin pole construction on Findlay Road as part of the Awarua Network Project. This upgrade is designed to make Southland’s electricity network stronger and more reliable. The work is expected to take six to eight weeks, with traffic management in place throughout the project.
Powernet has advised that there will be road closures and possible short detours. A spokesperson said, “Please follow all road signage and don’t hesitate to speak with one of the team if you have any queries.” They also added that people should allow for extra travel time and that “access for residents and business customers (including K9 Cribs and VetSouth) will remain available.” Emergency services will have uninterrupted access.
Meanwhile, Highways South is reminding drivers that SH1 Tay Street westbound will be closed from Inglewood Road to David Street on the evenings of Sunday 6 and Monday 7 July. This is to allow resurfacing work to take place, with closures beginning each evening at 6pm.
Light vehicles will be detoured via Inglewood Road, Otepuni Avenue and Lindisfarne Street. Heavy vehicles should use Inglewood Road and Tweed Street. Eastbound traffic is not affected.
Other restrictions during the night works include no right turn out of Isabella Street and no left turn from Anglem Street onto SH1 Tay Street. Residents in the area will still have access, and those living on David Street are asked to use Anglem Street and Dart Street, or Inglewood Road and Eldon Street.
Highways South will also have temporary traffic lights and speed limits at several other sites this week. These include:
- SH1 Tay Street at Lindisfarne Street (lane shift)
- SH1 Bluff Highway at McLauchlan Road (traffic lights)
- SH96 Wreys Bush-Nightcaps Highway at Nightcaps (traffic lights)
In addition, third-party contractors will be managing traffic at the following locations:
- SH1 Gore Mataura Highway between Racecourse Road and Saleyards Road (stop/go)
- SH1 Gore Mataura Highway between Falconer Road and Racecourse Road (stop/go)
- SH99 at Orawia Road in Tuatapere (stop/go)
- SH6 Athol Five Rivers Highway at Athol (stop/go)
