Sport Southland and ILT Stadium Southland are calling on Southlanders to step up to a new challenge; with the inaugural Stadium Step Up set to burst into action on Sunday 6 August.
The event will see participants take on an indoor course that will traverse the stairs, corridors and courts covering most of the interior at ILT Stadium Southland.
Open to walkers and runners of varying fitness abilities, the Stadium Step Up is a fun, non- timed event offering Southlanders an indoor fitness-based event in the middle of winter.
Sport Southland Events Manager Matt Sillars said the event was all about having a bit of fun.
“There aren’t too many events on the calendar during winter, so we thought why not make use of this outstanding indoor facility we have and join with ILT Stadium Southland to offer a fun, athletic event,” he said.
There are two categories – Fitness Fanatics, for those looking to push themselves and who want to run the whole course, and Social Climbers, for those who take a more social approach and may opt to walk some or all of the course.
“We’d expect people to take anywhere between 45 minutes to an hour to complete the course,” Sillars said.
“It’s a really good opportunity for people to get some fitness in during these winter months and have a bit of fun with their friends, workmates or colleagues.”
ILT Stadium Southland Business Development Manager Laura Morrison said the event promised plenty of variety.
“There will definitely be quite a few stairs – but you can take it as hard or as easy as you like.
The team from Fit4U are also set to make use of the community courts and present a few interesting challenges for participants, so it should be a lot of fun,” she said.
“It’s a fun, accessible event in a nice, warm and dry venue – perfect for the middle of winter!”
The concept is based on similar Stadium challenges held throughout the country.
The cost to enter ranges from $5 to $20.
