The pot is starting to boil over proposed changes to traffic patterns in inner city invers.
A proposed right turn from Dee street into Esk Street Mall and opening lower Don St to two way traffic at this stage appear to be the main points of contention.
Re-opening the Dee-Kelvin street of Don street back two way traffic at first seems ridiculous as the main buildings that attract foot traffic in that area are the Courts building and SIT Campus.
However there is the new City Council backed retail/office building under construction and there is more than a whiff that further commercial development is slated for that area with the Invercargill Licensing Trust announcing yesterday their plans for a new hotel.
A side issue also arises from these plans that have just been released. They come from an outside agency at probably no small fee. Couldn’t a local brains trust be enlisted to come up with an enlightened strategy?
Yes, we have seen several other bold new initiatives planned before that some say have come to naught. So what say you. Is this a brave new beginning or has the horse long bolted when it comes to retail in the city centre, wherever that is?
