With the 2025 local elections just four months away, whatsoninvers.nz is putting every Invercargill City Councillor in the hot seat to see who’s in—and who’s out—for another term. For this Q&A, conducted via email, we catch up with Councillor Darren Ludlow to discuss his intentions, priorities, and the issues he believes will define the coming campaign.*

*Note: All current councillors have been sent the same Q&A questions and will be published as we receive them!

Will you be standing again?
At this stage, yes

Why or why not?
I feel I still have something to offer, particularly around understanding of process and what the role involves (or doesn’t), and I’d like to help new councillors into understanding and up skilling on how local government works.

How long have you already been involved exactly?
This is my 8th term

What are you most proud of/achievements in the time you have been on council?
I’m proud to have been able to chair most of the standing committees and ensure meetings run efficiently and on-track; but it’s the many small things – when someone comes to you looking for help, either with an issue or just navigating how to get something done, that I really enjoy. It’s flattering to be seen as approachable.

What advice do you have for any new candidates standing?
Understand what the role is – the difference between governance and management; be prepared to listen and learn; look for help if you think you’re not being heard; and develop a thick skin.

What do you see are the pressing issues in your city that you are particularly passionate about?
Ensuring the new museum is completed as close to deadline as possible, but also within budget; continue to review relevant parts of the District Plan to help unable good residential development; and work with neighbouring authorities to develop a spatial plan for Southland.
