Authorities, including specialist squads supporting local officers, worked overnight at a rural property in an effort to resolve the situation safely.
The incident began on Tuesday morning around 9am, when Police began searching for a person of interest in relation to alleged firearms offences in the Clutha area.
At approximately 10:15am today, officers entered a house where they discovered the man deceased inside. His death has been referred to the Coroner, with Police assisting in the ongoing inquiries.
The man's family are receiving support during this difficult time.
Otago Coastal Area Commander, Inspector Marty Gray, acknowledged the outcome was not what Police had hoped for. However, he expressed gratitude to frontline staff and specialist teams for their dedication and efforts in managing the prolonged incident.
