A entourage of old bangers are making their way south to Bluff this weekend as part of a fundraiser for Multiple Sclerosis.
‘Bangers to Bluff’ first started nine years ago and involved participants finding an old car worth no more than $2000 and driving it the length of the country.
Once they arrived in the south the cars will be auctioned off by William Todd & Co (2011) Ltd on Saturday night at the Waikiwi Tavern.
The auction viewing starts at 4pm and kicks off at 5pm - there will be some real beauts in the mix - 2001 Nissan Pulsar, 2005 Ford Territory Tx, 2007 Ford Fairmont M11 Ghia, 2013 2006 Lexus GS450h, 2006 Subaru Legacy Stationwagon, 2000 Caldina, 2002 Toyota Corolla Stationwagon, 2004 VW Passat, 2001 Toyota Platz, a Specialized Allez Road Bike and Bike Rack along with a kayak.
Organised by the Rotary Club of Halfmoon Bay, there was also a mystery envelope auction with a range of prizes including flights and accommodation to Stewart Island.
Auctioneer Lynzy Francis said some of the old cars had been bought for a song and should all arrive in one piece at Bluff Point tomorrow.
“They are not really derelict cars,” he said. Participants were involved from all over New Zealand and the vehicles could either be bought or borrowed, but must be roadworthy for up to three months after the competition.
He said none of them would have a reserve and the last event two years ago raised up over $5000.
The 16 participants have spent the past week travelling up to 300km a day exploring the different sites around New Zealand.
Some of the highlights included the Fields Track, Takaha Hill, Dansey Pass and the Catlin Coast.
