Invercargill’s first FreshChoice supermarket (and the fourth for Southland) officially opened this morning (Wednesday June 17), and the public are invited to join in the celebrations.

Owner-operator Jigs Buha says the 57-year-old supermarket in Yarrow Street, rebranded from SuperValue Plaza, has been given a complete makeover.

“It will blow people’s minds. It looks totally different,” he said.

Jigs and his wife moved from the North Island a year and a half ago and are loving life in the South.

“Southlanders are good people and we’re excited to bring FreshChoice Plaza to the city - alongside Riverton, Otautau and Te Anau.”

He says from the moment customers arrive at the store, they’ll notice a new and improved look and feel both inside and out.

Expect bright, modern aisles, a clean layout, and an inviting atmosphere designed to make shopping trips easier and more enjoyable.

The food-to-go section will be packed with quick, delicious, and fresh options perfect for breakfast, lunch, or a cheeky afternoon snack.

The supermarket will have its own F'real thick shake machine, so customers can choose their flavour, blend it to the perfect thickness right on the spot, and enjoy a premium milkshake or smoothie in seconds.

Can't make it into the store? No worries at all. FreshChoice Plaza is making it easier than ever to get your groceries delivered straight to your doorstep. Serviced by Uber Eats, DoorDash and Delivereasy, dinner ingredients or late night snacks are only a phone call away.

The store’s conversion began last year with the florist counter and the checkout moved to the front door. The layout was rearranged to offer more space which allows for a wider product range supporting local producers.

“The store has a brand new look, brighter aisles We’ve upgraded our lighting and chillers to bring you a fully modernised shopping experience.”

Jigs says the Everyday Rewards programme now allows customers to earn points and get rewards in-store and online. The team is looking forward to seeing everyone on Wednesday morning at 9am, for some open day surprises in store.
