ILT Kidzone Director Claire Blau said some of the new activities had been selected because
they resonated with the festival’s “Around the World” theme, and helped to celebrate
multiculturalism and diversity.

“With sumo wrestling, Jamaican dance and flax weaving on offer, we are able to showcase
the global community we are part of in Southland,” Blau said.

Blau has secured giant sumo suits for the festival where people can challenge friends in the
Japanese sport of sumo wrestling.

Festival-goers will also be able to explore Maori culture by trying their hand at flax weaving in the Whanau room, and learn how to dance Jamaican style!
For the first time in the festival’s history, Southland Football will be attending to give families the opportunity to learn more about the game of football.

“With the Football world cup currently taking place, it will be great to give children the
opportunity to learn more about the increasingly popular sport,” Blau said.

Also new to the festival is the presence of Invas Corps Multiplayer Gaming Club.
The club will encourage creative thinking in a virtual world, with the chance to play a number of multi-player video games in a sociable and community-orientated environment.

Fresh from the Southland Brick Show, LUG South will also be part of the festival.
The Lego Users Group Experience room will encourage families to build the town in Lego.

Blau said it was great to have a diverse range of new activities for the festival to accompany
the regular festival favourites.
