A free expo later this month will provide much-needed support to Southland’s labour force.

Southlanders looking for employment advice and opportunities are being encouraged to attend the Great South Job Search 2020.

The event will be held in Gore on Tuesday 28 July and in Invercargill from Wednesday 29 July to Saturday 1 August, and will include job boards, seminars, and the opportunity to connect with employment support.

The Gore event will be held at 1 Brennan Lane (just behind the main street) and the Invercargill event at the Invercargill Public Library.

Great South GM for Business Services, Ben Lewis, said given the evolving impacts of COVID-19, the Great South Job Search was extremely timely and would provide much-needed support to Southland’s labour force.

“This event builds on previous Pop Up Job Shop events to provide those seeking employment with the advice, support and networks needed to learn more about, and connect with, the range of employment opportunities still available across the region,”

Mr Lewis said the highest numbers of vacancies being advertised at present were in the primary sector and associated businesses, and the event would help connect people with the information needed if they were interested in trying a new industry or role.

The initiative is being supported by a wide range of job search and career specialists, industry career representatives, and community organisations. There are also a range of free seminars being held each day.

Mr Lewis said the seminars, along with the staff on-site, would give job seekers practical advice on topics such as updating their CVs, preparing for interviews, and connecting with the tools needed to best find suitable work across the region.

Along with coordinating the event, Great South staff will also be available in Invercargill to discuss the Skills Placement Programme which supports migrants connecting with employment opportunities in the region and the work associated with Southland Youth Futures, Great South’s career exploration programme that builds pathways between education and employment.
