Who we are
Te Tapu o Tāne – we are on a mission to grow and plant millions of trees and plants in order to reduce impact on our land and water. We will achieve this by using our nurseries as a home base for catchment rehabilitation. In order to impact at scale Te Tapu o Tāne will work with catchment groups all the way from Bluff up into the lakes district.

Overview

Over the course of the next three years – Te Tapu o Tāne will be commencing the build of tree and plant nurseries to work out of and provide catchment rehabilitation services throughout Murihiku / Southland.

The role of the Operations Lead is a critical leadership role during start-up with great room for on-going development and networking around Southland in the environmental space.

We are looking for a leader with a proven track record, great understanding of health and safety and project framework mapping. Working and planning critical path operations. Process and procedural discipline held to a high standard and excellent means of communications.

What is the purpose of this position?

The purpose of the Operations Manager role is to lead and manage the team that oversee delivery, procurement, funding, contracting, and reporting of the Te Tapu o Tane Nursery Operations, ensuring that our practice across these key functions is continually developed and aligned with the high aspirations we hold on behalf of our owners, and we share with our partners.

Working for the Chief Executive, and alongside the leadership Team, this role will lead and work with the team to deliver outstanding results for the Trust as it grows its operations within the Murihiku takiwā.

Key Accountabilities

Operational Management

Uphold the Health and Safety Plan
Implement maintenance and training programme within the nursery.
Track and catalogue preferred suppliers.
Liaising with central govt, local govt, community and commercial enterprise.
Advancing Murihiku Environmental initiatives.
Overseeing and improving the daily functions of the nursery and catchment teams.
Opening the nursery in the morning and closing at the end of the business day
Hiring and training nursery staff.
Creating staff work rosters and delegating duties.
Ordering nursery stock including soil, stones, fertilisers, shrubs, plants, and trees.
Growing plants, trees, and shrubs to use as stock.
Monitoring watering times, soil conditions, and plant positions.
Monitoring weather conditions and paying special attention to hot or cold temperatures.
Responding to customer requests and assisting the nursery staff.

Continuous Improvement

Oversee quality assurance systems for processes and procedures across the core functions
Lead the team contribution to the development of new end to end operational processes and the continuous improvement of these
Contribute as a key leadership team member to a wide range of operational projects focused on the development of new initiatives, programmes, and procedures
Identify and recommend strategies to improve operational delivery arising from day-to-day support for the operational team

Managing Risks and Issues:

Ensure that there are appropriate systems and processes in place to manage serious issues and risks
Proactively identify and raise risks and issues associated with the day-to-day operation of the nursery, allocated initiatives, and projects
Effectively manage risks within the group and establish and contribute to the maintenance of a risk management framework
Escalate risks and propose appropriate mitigation where necessary.

Stakeholder Management:

Work collaboratively and effectively with your colleagues across the Trust to provide operational leadership and to deliver successfully on the Trust strategic plan and objectives
Represent the Trust at an agency level to support growth, advance the services for the business
Build and maintain credible and trusted relationships and networks across the region

Relationship Management

Build and maintain effective networks/relationships both within and beyond the Trust
Build networks with roles in other agencies to facilitate interagency sharing of good practice and collaborative working

Cultural Competence

Demonstrate understanding of, and commitment to, our Māori cultural framework and lead with the business
Understanding and appreciation of cross-cultural issues and concerns with knowledge of tikanga Māori, and Pacific peoples’ culture.

Provide direction of workscopes/planning and health and safety.

Qualifications

Tertiary qualification(s) in relevant discipline(s) and/or relevant experience in running nursery or related operations. Degree in biological science preferred, agricultural studies, horticulture, or a similar field.

Project management experience at a senior level with supporting qualifications

Skills

3+ Years’ experience working in an Operational Leadership Position.

Excellent communication and managerial skills.
