• Top cyclists from across New Zealand will race through Invercargill’s city streets in January 2026
  • The event returns following the success of the 2025 championships held in Southland
  • Weekend to include road and track cycling events offering action for all cycling fans

Invercargill will again host one of New Zealand’s top cycling events, with Cycling Southland confirming the return of the New Zealand Criterium Championships in January 2026.

The event will take place on Saturday 17 January, bringing together the country’s best riders — including Olympians and talented junior cyclists — for an exciting day of racing in the heart of the city. This marks a second consecutive year that Invercargill has secured hosting rights for the championships, building on the success of the 2025 event.

Cycling Southland President Julian Ineson said the organisation was excited to welcome the competition back to Southland. “We are thrilled to again be hosting the Criterium Champs, an event where the public can enjoy the thrills of fast-paced racing around the streets of Invercargill — up close and personal. It’s also an incredible opportunity for many of our junior riders to mix it with some of New Zealand’s top cyclists, including Olympians.”

The strong backing from local supporters helped make the 2025 event a standout success. Key contributors included the ILT, Southland businesses, dedicated volunteers, and the local community. This combined effort was vital in securing another year of top-tier cycling for the region.

The 2026 Championships will be part of a larger weekend of cycling action. Alongside the criterium, fans can look forward to the Custom Canvas Watson Gore to Invercargill Classic — New Zealand’s longest-running road race — as well as thrilling track races in the ILT New Year Carnival.

Cycling Southland says it is proud to continue showcasing the region’s strong ties to the sport and to offer a national platform for riders of all levels.
