Invercargill Airport is preparing for a significant terminal upgrade aimed at improving security, passenger flow, and overall customer experience. With a $4 million investment, the airport’s redevelopment is designed to meet aviation security screening standards while paving the way for more efficient jet services.
Key changes include upgraded systems for cabin baggage screening, an expanded jet lounge, and improvements to how passengers move through the terminal. These enhancements will be made within the current terminal space and are set to boost both function and comfort for travellers.
CEO Stuart Harris said, “This is a compliance-driven functional upgrade, but it’s also an unmistakable indicator of Southland’s momentum. We’re affirming confidence in our region’s growth and ensuring Invercargill Airport can continue to connect Southlanders with New Zealand and the world. It’s about readiness, reliability, and reflecting the pride we have in our community.”
The project will be carefully staged to avoid disruption to airport operations. Clear communication with passengers and the wider community will ensure everyone stays informed as construction progresses over the next six months.
In addition to functional upgrades, the airport will use the opportunity to showcase Southland’s regional character. A creative campaign called “Postcards from the South” will turn construction hoardings into visual celebrations of the region’s landscapes, stories, and people.
While the upgrade is focused on compliance and better customer service, it also represents a broader vision for Southland’s future. The airport’s investment highlights confidence in regional growth and a commitment to maintaining reliable and efficient air connections.
