A number of young Southland women were given the opportunity to speak with Rt Hon Helen Clark in Invercargill yesterday ahead of the former PM’s speaking engagement at the Civic Theatre.

Clark visited both Southland Girls High School and Murihiku Young Parents’ Learning Centre to talk about her own experiences, and to answer the young women’s questions.
SGHS’s Global Minds Club, which addresses the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, invited Clark to speak to around 50 pupils yesterday afternoon.

Club leader Molly Hayward (17) said it was an incredible experience to hear from Clark, as the former United Nations Development Programme leader, and as a woman in a leadership role.
Clark then spoke about equality and power at the Invercargill Civic Theatre to a near sell-out crowd.

Clark delighted the audience with witty quips and funny stories, while also sharing stark statistics relative to her work with women all over the world as UNDP Administrator.
The evening was a fundraiser for the upcoming KIND Women Southland Women’s Hui next month.
