The country’s southernmost regions, Otago and Southland, are bracing for a significant winter blast over the next 42 hours. Periods of heavy snow are forecast above about 300 metres from Saturday, 1st July, 3pm, through to Monday, 3rd July, 9am, with some snowfall expected down to near sea level. Areas south of the line from Queenstown to Alexandra and Mosgiel, including Southland and Stewart Island, are set to experience the brunt of this winter storm.

The heaviest snowfall is expected from Saturday evening through to Sunday evening, with accumulations ranging from 20 to 35 cm above about 300m. Lower lying areas are also expected to receive lesser amounts of snowfall.

This heavy snowfall could potentially disrupt travel in affected areas, damage trees and power lines, and cold conditions could cause stress for livestock.

In addition to the snow, a strong wind watch is in effect for 9 hours from 3pm to midnight on Saturday, 1st July. Areas south of Lumsden including Stewart Island, Clutha, and Dunedin are expected to be affected. West to southwest winds may approach severe gale force in exposed places.

Thunderstorms are also possible in Southland and Clutha this afternoon and evening. Residents are advised to stay updated on the weather conditions and take necessary precautions to ensure safety.
