Heavy snow for parts of the lower South Island

A cold showery southwesterly flow covering the South Island, is expected to spread over the North Island today (Monday). Snow is expected to 200 metres across the lower South Island, especially tonight and early Tuesday morning, with some heavy falls above 400 metres.

This Watch is for the possibility of snow accumulations reaching Warning criteria above 400 metres in Fiordland, Southland, Clutha and Otago during Monday night and early Tuesday morning.

People are advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts in case parts of this Watch are upgraded to a full warning or new areas are added.

Area: Fiordland
Valid: 9 hours from 6:00pm Monday to 3:00am Tuesday
Forecast: Another period of heavy snow is expected above 400 metres during Monday evening and early Tuesday morning, especially about southern areas. Snow accumulations may exceed warning criteria.

Area: Inland parts of Southland, Clutha and Otago
Valid: 12 hours from 6:00pm Monday to 6:00am Tuesday
Forecast: Period of heavy snow is expected above 400 metres from Monday night through to early Tuesday morning. Accumulations may approach warning criteria.
